Kay Parent
Kay has been in private practice as a Community
Herbalist since 1996. She started initial training with Susan
Clements in Wickford and went on to Rosemary Gladstar's Intensive Herbal
Apprenticeship, Advanced herbal Training in VT and numerous summers of
Beyond Herbology.
Other professional studies include
Traditional Herbal Diagnosis with Matthew Wood, Facial Diagnosis, Formulation
adn Visceral Diagnosis and Palpation with William LaSassier & ongoing
Practitioner days with Margi Flint, Earthsong Herbals.
Her herbal journeys have taken her
to the Findhorn Community, Scotland with Eileen Caddy and Garden Island,
Michigan with Keewaydinoquay.
She has also worked as an herbalist
at The Herb Wyfe, Aquidneck Growers Market and Hilltop Garden CSA.
Now her days are full at Earthweaver
seeing clients and creating custom medicines.
Any other treasured moments are
spent in the garden with the plants.
Mary Blue Hastings
Bio:Mary
Blue Hastings facilitates a 7-month herbal education and training
program for budding herbalists and offers classes and workshops to
gardening, senior and special interest groups and organizations. Since
2004 she has been the Practicing Herbalist, Education Coordinator and
Director of The Peace Gardens Botanical Sanctuary at Seven Arrows Herb
Farm.
Over the last 8 years she has taught numerous free garden/nutrition/herbal
workshops to children and high school students in Providence. She is a founding
member of the following community groups: The Annual Northeast Grassroots
Community Herbal Convergence, Farmacy Herbs, Health and Education Center, and
Providence Recycle-A- Bike.
Farmacy Herbs, Health and Education Center (farmacyherbs.com) is now her main
focus. Farmacy is a non-profit (501-c3) donation based herb shop and community
health center offering free holistic based support to cancer patients and
sliding scale natural health consultations to community members.
From 1999-2002 she acquired three years of herbal experience and knowledge at
Indigo Herbals, an herb shop in Providence RI.
She has worked with many teachers through symposiums and conferences.
In 2004, she started her career as a Community Herbalist at Seven Arrows and
currently sells a line of specialized medicinal tinctures and teas at Farmers
Markets and local stores.
In 2007 Mary presented
at the annual NEHA retreat. She shared photographs and stories of her
experiences as an herbalist volunteering in the health clinics in New Orleans,
post Katrina. She volunteered from December 2006- March 2007, teaching herb
classes, organizing disaster zone apothecarys, and administering herbs, flower
essences and first aid to relief workers and hurricane victims. Info about these

The NEHA Council has established a Community Herbalist Award to honor those
amongst us who have done much to share their knowledge and love of medicinal
plants. This past November at our Annual Retreat, Agnes Adler was presented with
the very first award. If any of you have ever met Agnes at any of the numerous
conferences over the years, you will know what an amazing woman she is and what
an incredible life she has led.
So we are asking all of you enthusiastic herbalists out there to
send in your nominations for this years recipient. We have established some
guidelines to help you with your decision on who to nominate. The criteria are
as follows:
The nominee must be a member of NEHA.
The nominee must have been or is still involved in service to the herbal
community.
The nominee must make herbalism accessible to the community at large.
If you know of someone whom you feel fits this description that you would
like to nominate; please write 2-3 paragraphs with your information and send it
to the address listed below.
The deadline for your nomination is August 30th. All nominations will be posted
online on the NEHA website and then your votes must be cast by September 1st.
The nominee will be awarded at the Annual Retreat in November. This will be held
November 14th , 15th , and 16th at 9Mountain in Plainfield, MA. (You can read
